She always read the obituaries first,
when she finally got the paper
after Grandpa finished at breakfast,
then turned to Dear Abby
always agreeing with her advice.
She liked to see who got married
and divorced or made the police blotter report.
She worked the crossword, always with a pencil,
never quite confident enough for a pen,
then finish with the comics
laughing and saying with a shake of the head
“That Andy Capp is a caution.”

  1. Ahhh. I love the warmth of the speaker’s voice. Love the description, almost a mini-list poem.

  3. I feel like you somehow snuck into my poor, wild mind, Debi. Such a wonderful fugue on the theme.
