A Golden Shovel “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free” Michelangelo

A mood, a need, a hurt, a sweetness, a yearning that I
sensed as a quickening, a flutter of viability, then saw
into the very heart of beauty the flawless, the ideal, the
archetype of my hopes and dreams like an angel
fixed in goodness and grace, perfection, holiness in
every exquisite line, subtlety of motion, fluidity of the
once molten, flowing, liquid rock now set, rigid as marble
yet the artist knows the figure resides inside and
with precision of hammer and chisel, chipped and carved,
brushed and smoothed, cutting away the dross until
what is revealed is the what was meant to be, much as I
with simple tools chip and shape and wrest to life words. Set
words to dance to music from a sacred place. Like him
who carves stone, poets sculpt with words to set the spirit free.

  1. Gosh! This is such a stunning golden shovel Debi 😀 love the artwork you have chosen as inspiration for this exquisite poem. Especially in awe of ” Like him who carves stone, poets sculpt with words to set the spirit free.”

  2. I always wanted to be a sculptor, a skill I have never tried, but I agree that we can achieve something similar with our words. You made my heart smile 😀 XXX

  3. How very true Debi, we try this everyday with varying degrees of success I have to say…..but we keep trying because we love the process of creation. Having seen up close some of Michelangelo’s art I’m glad he was able to set them free.

  4. I love that the first sentence of the poem is smooth and long, like the muscles of the sculpture. One piece that works within itself and with the rest of the whole, like each line of a poem should be. And your last two lines are just magnificent truth. Beautiful and affecting.

  5. Yes – all of those things in the opening lines fluttered and resonated – i love how you have absorbed the quote and revealed its meaning and wisdom in your poem – a true work of art
